Therapies, Pain Treatment and Rehabilitation

Lyme disease infections are curable in most cases.  However, particularly in the case of chronic progressions of the disease, it can often take several months.

The attending physicians of the Medical Partnership cooperating with the BCB determine an individual therapy plan for each patient on the basis of the diagnosis (extended anamnesis, physical examination and laboratory findings).

Note:  During a Lyme disease infection with a severe ailments symptomatology (incl. psychosomatic symptoms and ailments), it is also important, besides fighting the pathogens (Lyme Borrelia, usually with antibiotics), to conduct measures such as reducing chronic inflammations, strengthening of the immune system and the body's immune defense, as well as recovery of the physical performance (incl. organ functions).

Possibilities and stages of therapy (individually coordinated and determined with the physicians of the medical partnership and the patient):

Basis:   Antibiotic Treatment  (“Augsburg Scheme” for several weeks/months - in accordance to the ILADS guidelines)

+ supporting “accompanying therapies”, such as

  • Module "Milieu corrections (incl. detoxication & deacidification) + change of diet"
  • Module "nutritional supplement + naturopathy/natural remedies"
  • Module "Physiotherapies + electro therapies"
  • Module "Pain therapy"
  • Module "Mental coaching"
  • Package "Gain vitality": Rehabilitation and strengthening of the immune system

and "Change of life style" (necessary and easy measures for "self-help" by patients)

The main focus of each therapy is a sufficiently highly dosed treatment with antibiotics for a period of several weeks under the surveillance of the physician in charge (mostly in the form of an infusion therapy). Herewith Borrelia bacteria in the body are fought and the immune system gets support in building up resistance.

According to our experience the successful treatment of chronically ill Lyme disease patients demands  additional "accompanying therapies“ and  a "change of life style“ of the patient.  As a result chronic inflammations can be reduced and the immune defense can be balanced out again.  The antibiotics are also supported in their function to detect and destroy Borrelia and other pathogens.

The BCB was especially designed to enable patients to get these "Accompanying therapies” in addition to a treatment with antibiotics (or even instead) on-site. The accompanying therapies are not offered by physicians of the Medical Partnership, but by therapists and employees of the Borreliose Centrum Blankenburg, Kur- und Tagungshotel Stadt Blankenburg GmbH & Co. KG.  The range of services mainly consists of the following elements: naturopathic therapies, dietary supplements, wide range of physiotherapy, Photon- and electro therapies, nutritional advice and exercice programme (undefinedLink).

Such “Accompanying therapies” can be taken as single treatments or as weekly program Lyme disease "Intensive treatment and rehabilitation“ in the BCB day medical clinic for one or more weeks (undefinedLink).  You will receive information and an introduction to "self help“ (undefinedLink) to activate your self-healing powers (support of the immune system).

Usually the main issue of each therapy – as already explained above – is a highly dosed treatment with antibiotics for a period of several weeks under the surveillance of the physician in charge (mostly in the form of an infusion therapy).

Milieu therapy with nutritional advice:  measures that can be easily implemented, such as drinking plenty of fluid every day, plenty of fresh air, UV-light, laughing, etc.  The body usually needs a detoxication and strengthening of the organs (liver, kidneys and possibly the gastrointestinal tract).  Lyme disease patients often have a acidic milieu and this is what Borrelia bacteria need to survive.  The diet should be changed to an alkaline diet and additional alkaline supplements should be taken.  It is widely unknown that a some diets stimulate inflammations - therefore some foods should be avoided.  The diet should be changed (health, balanced and alkaline foods, plenty of vegetables and fruits, healthy fatty acids (omega-3), fish, Mediterranean food, etc.).

Special accompanying therapies (undefinedLink) (e.g. a photon therapy or an oxygen therapy according to Ardenne) can, in most cases, lead to better results with the antibiotics and destroys Borrelia bacteria more effectively.

The side effects of the antibiotics can be reduced with the help of the oxygen therapy and special dietary supplements (including probiotics).  A special micro nutriment treatment (BCA immune package) was developed for this reason.

Please note: according to patient's wish and in case of specific indications (e.g. intolerance of antibiotics, etc.), an alternative medical therapy can be offered instead of usual antibiotic treatment.

Many Lyme disease patients suffer from severe pain, often also chronic pain, which is triggered by inflammatory reactions of the weakened immune defense.  One focal point of the Medical Partnership cooperating with the BCB is pain therapy (Link).  This can take place in the form of prescriptions of pain relievers or so-called co-analgetics as well as in services offered by the team of therapists of the Borreliose Centrum Blankenburg, such as acupuncture, TENS-therapy and Hightone therapy.

Mental attendance - gain confidence and lose your fears:  Therapies to overcome an existing depression and to rearrange your mental position (therapists as a "Coach", therapy through dialogue, exchange of experience with other patients, stress relaxation and meditation techniques, techniques of problem solving and self-organisation).

Become active and build up the immune system with the help of a specific and early recovery programme in the rehabilitation area of BCB:
According to your physical capability you start a specific and individual rehabilitation and fitness therapy programme immediately.

Ensure that you have enough time to recover, it's for your health!

Medical therapies and pharmaceuticals can cause many positive effects.

But: What about necessary changes of lifestyle?
Especially for chronically ill patients it is necessary to change the lifestyle in the long-term in order to strengthen the immune system (mentally/activity/nutrition)!

We would like to support/coach you.

Improvement of the physical constitution:  individual rehabilitation programs (physiotherapies, massages, special training programs with experienced therapists and trainers).

Additional range of therapies of the complementary medicine: traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), classical homoeopathy, photon- and hightone therapy, naturopathy, ethnomedicine, etc.

With a holistic and individually designed therapy side effects of the antibiotic treatment can not only be significantly reduced, but the body's defense system can be recovered and the immune system strengthened and some organ functions can be supported.

Many patients still think that they can only recover with the help of pharmaceuticals and/or single pain therapy treatments.  But: The mental reorganisation and change of life style necessary for chronically ill patients (aim: strengthening of the immune system) is often neglected and needs a lot of persuasion through the attending physician.

Therefore we recommend  - especially for chronically infected Lyme disease patients – to make use of the "day medical clinic" with the weekly program Lyme disease “Intensive treatment and rehabilitation“ for 5 days (Mon-Fri) up to 3 weeks, or even  2 - 4 months respectively.  The program is specially designed for chronically ill Lyme disease patients and those patients who would like to fight Borrelia bacteria holistically, to strengthen their immune system and their body’s defense system.  Such intensive treatment increases the healing chances enormously and offers further advantages. Please note: patients of the Medical Partnership which cooperates with the BCB, are not obliged to use the services ("accompanying services" and products) of the Borreliose Centrum Blankenburg.  In the course of developing the therapy plan the attending physician also advises the patient, where else to obtain these services.
